“My first encounter with the Moai was as a boy watching Saturday morning cartoons. Later, I came across a National Geographic feature about Easter Island and its stone giants. My fascination grew. Here were massive stone structures quarried and sculptured by hand, miles from where they now stand on the shore, waiting and watching. While watching the movie Night at the Museum, my interest in the Moai was re-kindled. The larger-than-life faces interacting with people combined both my need to create on a grand scale and my style of art. I’m excited to create an interpretation of these monolithic statues. Using metal rather than stone, my moai will patina over time, eventually taking on the colors of something ancient and weather-worn. People will be free to interact with and enjoy the piece as their experience leads them.”
