Did you ever wonder who lives in your backyard? If you're sculptor Greg Wasil, the possibilities are endless.

“With an enthusiastic background in metal and machines, I love to create interactive sculptures. When my daughters were young, their favorite bedtime story was The Dinosaur Who Lived in My Backyard, by B.G. Hennessey. He was a long-neck dinosaur named Bob. This beloved childhood story inspired my largest work to that time: sturdy yet whimsical dinosaurs full of personality – sculpture that could happily live in anyone’s backyard.

This is Bob the Dinosaur. He is very friendly and likes it when people sit on him.”

A local artist in Lakewood, Wasil lives with a menagerie of creatures, both real and imagined. From his studio window he can watch the antics of chickens and ducks or listen to the whinnies and neighs of his daughter's horses. In that small studio he sculpts his whimsical creatures, a Moai from Easter Island, the fire breathing "Beast" known for cruising down Santa Fe on First Fridays in Denver, Ellie the Elephant and the horses Dart and Copper. There's even a centurion to watch them all.

Of all the creatures one of his favorite is Bob the Dinosaurs.

When Wasil's daughters were young, their favorite bed time story was "The Dinosaur Who Lived in My Backyard" by B.G. Hennessey. It's about a long-neck dinosaur named Bob that lived in what's now the backyard of a young boy. The story inspired Wasil to create a life size dinosaur that could happily live in anyone's backyard, ready to go on any child's adventure.

Wasils art is meant to be interacted with, to be touched, climbed on, sat on, spun around, played with in whatever way the viewer feels moved. For this reason his pieces have to be structurally sound and as safe as possible yet light enough to be moved. Bob the Dinosaur and the other large sculptures are made with 20 gage steel over a frame. Some are painted and others are left to patina naturally.

Where is Bob now? Bob the Dinosaur is currently visiting this year's Evergreen Sculpture Walk. This is the third year Wasils sculptures have been displayed at the art walk. Ellie the Elephant and the Moai from Easter Island were the previous pieces. Bob has previously been to the Mile High Music Festival and road trips to Dinosaur Ridge and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

So take your favorite story up to Stagecoach Park in Evergreen and spend an afternoon with Bob the Dinosaur. Go on your own adventure and see who lives in your backyard.
